Aspiring Writers Spring Edition  2007
CHIMNEY

Why do you laugh?
Because I'm different
Because you are not the same
Because we're unalike?

Why do you laugh?
Because
I have a duty of gulf
In relation to yours?

Why do you laugh?
Is it because
You are shiny
While I'm dull?

Think again:
What are you to gain
When at me you scorn
Each tooth resembling a corn?

You receive regular polishing,
Which helps to make you
Glisten glamorously with glory,
While I've got a coat of dust.

Why do you laugh?
That is only a gloss:
Are we not all
Of the same making?

Why do you laugh?
Are you also
Not made of sand
And brick and cement?

Are you not grateful
For my humble kindness
In safeguarding
Your aesthetic appeal?

For how long
Would your glossy coats
Retain their aims
When non-existent I am?
